Although cybersecurity plays a critical role in protecting the privacy, rights, freedoms, and physical safety of customers, companies often fail to protect their digital assets from backdoor cyber activities. As security threats evolve, it is no surprise that organizations dedicate a greater share of resources to defend themselves. Unfortunately, even after making huge investments in cybersecurity, many companies often fail to secure their environment. In fact, the occurrence may be attributed to a lack of expertise in configuring and deploying security solutions and in detecting and patching vulnerabilities. Against this backdrop, Avertium, a managed security and consulting service provider, steps in with their out-ofthe- box cybersecurity services. The company’s unique understanding of today’s threat landscape, business processes, workflows, and vulnerabilities gives them the edge to develop a smarter, stronger, and more responsive approach to cybersecurity. “Avertium is a comprehensive cybersecurity company that understands the intricacies of security. We enable businesses to thrive in a hostile environment and come out on top in their fight against black hats,” mentions Paul Caiazzo, SVP, corporate development and CSO at Avertium. The company achieves this by helping its clients understand the strengths and weaknesses of their existing digital infrastructure. They evaluate the process, procedure, technical controls, architecture and more, and recommend reinforcements in the digital ecosystem.

As Avertium looks for potential exposure points, they understand the tactics, techniques, and procedures cybercriminals leverage during an attack. This also allows them to build a comprehensive security program that detects and proactively responds to threats across the entire environment. As they always go a step further to locate the genesis of a security issue, they effectively block them and prevent future threats. They achieve this by configuring the client’s existing security system and adapting it for their unique business process. The company’s rigorous and reimagined approach to XDR (Extended Detection and Response) also helps them in future threat prevention. Traditional XDR platforms enable cybersecurity through a technology focus by collecting, correlating and analyzing event data from any source on the network, such as end-points, applications, network devices, and user interactions. On the contrary, Avertium’sXDR Reimagined builds on a multi-dimensional model by combining deep knowledge in best-in-class technologies, proprietary engagement methodology, and security maturity model.Rather than point solutions, Avertium is able to fully integrate SIEM, EDR, Vulnerability Management, Zero-Trust Networking and Architecture, and Integration Services, all by its certified experts 24/7. Avertium builds on customer relationships by creating, in collaboration with the customer, a methodical and disciplined forward motion to improve an organization’s security posture. This approach provides the customer more visibility into data, networks, cloud, endpoints, and applications. “We always help customers understand their attack surface and ensure to provide visibility into all areas of their ecosystem,” mentions Caiazzo.

Avertium primarily offers four categories of managed security services: security strategy services, threat detection and response, attack surface management, and GRC services.

Avertium is a comprehensive cybersecurity company that understands the intricacies of security. We enable businesses to thrive in a hostile environment and come out on top in their fight against black hats

With the first category of services, the company diagnoses a security issue and helps the client build a security roadmap. In doing so, the company considers the client’s budget and business processes and builds a practical strategy for them. The second category of services includes XDR and specialized security operation centers required to manage the threat response effectively. In addition, the company offers managed SIEM services and managed XDR, designed to bring multiple technologies together. With that, they identify the cybersecurity trends through behavioral analysis and find specific tactics, techniques, and procedures employed by a cybercriminal. Such services allow the client to manage a full cycle of incident response that enables them to recover their breached environment and resume business operations in record time.

The company’s third category of services includes a zerotrust network assessment. This service helps the customer understand the vulnerabilities in the network and build a zero-trust architecture. Additionally, the company leverages penetration testing tools to solve tactical issues within the attack surface and helps customers secure them. Finally, with their fourth category of services, GRC (Governance Risk and Compliance), the company helps organizations adhere to compliance, including HIPAA, PCI, CCPA, and GDPR. As they believe that compliance is a byproduct of security, they focus on building a strong security program that includes compliance mandates required for the organization.

In one instance, an insurance company approached Avertium with a ransomware incident. The client wanted to identify, clean, and contain the ransomware attack. During the process of containing the attack, the company uncovered many vulnerabilities in the client’s system. They understood that the client had no visibility into the network and lacked the technology coverage required to respond to threats. The company collaborated with the client’s team and helped them resume their operations by containing the security incident. They also worked with the client’s senior executives, legal counsel, and insurance firms and helped them make the right decisions.

Such success stories stem from Avertium’s commitment to helping their client overcome serious situations that can even determine an organization’s future. To assist them in this endeavor, the company leverages its vast network of partners. Moving ahead, the company plans to acquire new capabilities to cater to the diverse security requirements of its clients.

Flash Notice: Two Microsoft Vulnerabilities Exploited in the Wild

Thursday, April 18, 2024

This week, Microsoft patched two zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-29988 and CVE-2024-26234) that are currently being exploited in the wild.

CVE-2024-29988 (CVSS 8.8)

CVE-2024-29988 is a SmartScreen prompt security feature bypass that can be used to bypass the Mark of the Web (MotW) security feature. While Microsoft's official advisory does not acknowledge ongoing exploitation, researchers from Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative discovered that the vulnerability is being used by the threat actor, Water Hydra, in an attack campaign. This campaign uses Microsoft Defender SmartScreen as a vector to distribute the DarkMe malware to financial market traders.

CVE-2024-26234 (CVSS 6.7)

This vulnerability is a proxy driver spoofing flaw that was reported to Microsoft by Sophos in December 2023. Attacks utilizing this exploit were discovered through an analysis of an executable file, signed with a valid Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) certificate, associated with an Android screen mirroring application named LaiXi. The analyzed file was a malicious backdoor file. LaiXi is an application designed for marketing purposes, allowing users to link multiple mobile devices and manage them collectively. It automates various tasks such as bulk following, liking, and commenting to enhance the user's audience reach.

Microsoft has addressed the vulnerabilities by providing patches.
Avertium recommends applying the patches for CVE-2024-29988 and CVE-2024-26234 as soon as possible.
